This recipe lives up to its title, EASY! It only requires 3 ingredients, one of which is water, so really only 2 ingredients! This lemonade comes together quick and is a hit for springtime potlucks, barbecues or birthday parties. Once you master the base of this classic lemonade you can play around and add in different fruits, seasonings or even booze!
5 fresh lemons
6 1/2 cups of water, divided
1 cup white sugar
First up you will be making a simple syrup. Most people don’t realize how easy simple syrup is to make, you might recognize it from an ingredient in one of your favorite cocktails but not be sure what it is. Simple syrup is just that, simple. It’s boiled water and sugar together that makes a thicker sweet syrup. In a small sauce pot over medium high heat, bring 1 cup sugar and 1 1/2 cups water to a low boil, keep the low boil going, stirring frequently, until all of the sugar is fully dissolved. Once done, take it off of the burner and let it cool. Your reduction will end up giving you about a cup of simple syrup. Next, grab a pitcher to make your lemonade, juice 5 lemons into the bottom of your pitcher, making sure no seeds escape. To your lemon juice, add 5 cups cold water and 1/2 cup of your simple syrup, stir then taste, adding more simple syrup to reach your desired sweetness. I usually use 3/4 cup of simple syrup, then save the rest in my fridge. Store your lemonade in the fridge and drink within 10 days.
Once you realize how easy a simple syrup is to make and store, you’ll find yourself always having some made. It’s the perfect way to add sweetness to any cocktails or punches. Simple syrup works so well as it doesn’t water down whatever drink you add it to. It’s also already dissolved sugar so you get sweetness with no graininess. Some other favorite ways I use simple syrup is in homemade sweet tea and sangrias. My tip for this lemonade actually comes in the form of a functional garnish. If buying a bag of lemons to make your lemonade you will end up with more than 5. Grab an extra lemon and slice it into rounds about a 1/4” thick. Push a plastic straw through the middle of the lemon and place them in each lemonade glass. As the ice in the lemonade melts it will keep adding an extra lemon flavor and as you drink your lemonade the lemon straw sinks with your drink keeping it flavored the entire time. Not to mention just how fun the bright colored lemons and straws look in the glasses.
